St. John’s Lutheran Church in Algoma, Wisconsin, is a congregation of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), committed to biblical teaching, traditional liturgical worship, and the Lutheran Confessions. Our congregation offers Sunday School, adult Bible study, catechism classes preparing young people for confirmation, and an active high school youth group that participates in mission trips and service opportunities. St. John’s also has an active Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) and Ladies’ Aid, providing opportunities for fellowship, service, and Christian outreach. Rooted in God’s Word and centered on Christ, St. John’s welcomes individuals and families to grow together in faith.
The congregation is rather casual. You will probably feel most comfortable dressing up a little nicer than normal, but you will see everything from blue jeans to suit jackets.
We ask that men worship with uncovered heads (no hats). Women, however, may wear a head covering.
When you arrive, enter through the narthex (the church entrance), where the pastor will likely greet you. Feel free to sit anywhere you like in our pews.
Our worship services are built around our belief that Jesus Christ comes to us through His Word and Sacraments, bringing us His forgiveness and the gifts of salvation. You'll hear readings from the Bible, a sermon explaining God's Word, and prayers offered by the congregation.
Most of our services are accompanied by the organ and feature traditional hymns and liturgy taken directly from our Lutheran hymnals. Occasionally, we also sing newer hymns, such as In Christ Alone, from a supplemental booklet.
You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you feel comfortable. There is no pressure to sing, speak, or recite anything. We simply ask that you follow the congregation's lead in standing and sitting during the service.
Holy Communion: During Communion, we receive a sacred meal of bread and wine, which we believe is also the true body and blood of Jesus Christ, given for the forgiveness of sins. Because Communion is both a sacred gift and an expression of our unity in faith, we practice closed communion. If you are not a member of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) or a church body with whom we share altar and pulpit fellowship, please speak with the pastor before receiving Communion.
Holy Baptism: You may also witness a Baptism during worship. Baptism is a sacred washing with water and God's Word, through which we believe Christ gives the forgiveness of sins, brings us into His Church, and grants us new life in Him. We baptize both infants and adults.
We are glad to have you worship with us! You don't need to know all the words, understand every tradition, or have everything figured out before you visit. You're welcome to come, listen, and learn more about the gifts Christ gives to His people.
We believe that children grow in the faith by being in worship, and that children help adults grow in faith by being in worship. Because of this, the children worship with the entire congregation.
Children can sometimes be loud - that's okay! We welcome it! However, if you need to step outside of the sanctuary to comfort a distressed child, we have a mothers' cry room available.

We have a parking lot onsite.

At every worship service, Jesus Christ is present with us and transforms sinners into saints and makes the dead to live eternally. Those are nothing short of miracles. I invite you to come and experience that at a worship service at St. John's.
